Mortality data published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate on 7 November 2023 is enough to out you off 'fresh', 'healthy', 'responsible', 'organic' and 'welfare friendly' Scottish salmon forever – with over 65 million dead fish (mostly Atlantic salmon but some rainbow trout and sea trout) reported on Scotland's farms since 2015.

As the Scottish Government so helpfully explains "the information presented is not a comprehensive record of fish farm mortality but only details situations where the mortality reporting thresholds have been reached and where this information has been reported to Marine Scotland by the industry or where information has been obtained through FHI surveillance":

In other words, not all mortalities on salmon farms are reported. The fact is that since 2013 there has been no data published – and perhaps not even officially collected – detailing the number of mortalities. As Rob Edwards reported in The Sunday Herald in October 2013:
