Mowi has blood on its hands over horrific death of Clive Hendry – how much will Mowi be fined for negligence?

Cheap Scottish salmon comes at a huge price – to seals (who are killed by salmon farms), shellfish (who are killed by toxic chemicals used by salmon farms), cetaceans (who are scared away by Acoustic Deterrent Devices), wild fish (who are killed by lice infestations and infectious diseases emanating from salmon farms) and even workers such as Clive Hendry.

Today (26 May 2021), the Marine Accident Investigation Branch published a damning report on how negligence by Norwegian-owned Mowi caused the horrific death of Clive Hendry who was crushed between a workboat and feed storage unit at the Ardintoul salmon farm in Loch Alsh in February 2020.

When Scottish Salmon Watch visited Mowi's disease-ridden salmon farm at Ardintoul in Loch Alsh in November 2019 – just three months before Clive Hendry's horrific death in February 2020 – we witnessed how reckless Mowi can be.

Mowi has been responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of farmed salmon and dozens of seals in Loch Alsh.  Scottish Salmon Watch reported in January 2020:

The publication of damning documents by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate (published online on 17 January 2020) reveals why Mowi's lawyers are so desperate for people to stay away from their virus-laden feedlots.

"At the time of the visit moribund fish and some floating mortalities were observed in all cages" stated the FHI inspection report dated 18 December 2019.   The FHI inspection report also detailed "3,221 morts due to concussions due to increased Caligus [lice] burdens" with 73,459 morts (dead salmon) between 9 September and 13 October 2019.   Here's the Fish Health Inspectorate's 'Case Information' relating to an inspection of Mowi's Ardintoul salmon farm on 17 October 2019.

Tourist operator Nigel Smith has reported seals slaughtered in Loch Alsh (a Special Area of Conservation and Marine Protected Area) with shocking photos of dead seals naming and shaming Marine Harvest (re-named Mowi in 2019).

The death of Clive Henry in February 2020 is not the first time Mowi (renamed from Marine Harvest in 2019 due to "negative consumer perception") has been criticised following a fatality at one of its salmon farms.  BBC News reported in 2007:

The price of the life of a worker is apparently negotiable and judged by previous fines handed out to salmon farming companies Mowi could expect a fine anywhere between £300,000 to £166,667

In Chile, the price of a dead salmon farm worker appears higher.  In 2009, the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet reported on deaths of workers in Chile at Cermaq and Marine Harvest (before 1 January 2019, Mowi was named Marine Harvest).

Mowi can afford to pay any fine.    Earlier month (19 May 2021), Mowi reported operational revenues of EUR 1 022 million (EUR 885 million) for Q1 2021 and in 2020 the Norwegian-owned company had a turnover of EUR 3.8 billion.  Mowi's owner is John Fredriksen – nicknamed 'Big Wolf', the 'Viking Raider' and McFreddy – and he is worth ca. $10 billion.
