Seals scored a significant victory this week in Scotland following a ruling by the Scottish Information Commissioner forcing the Scottish Government to name all salmon farms killing seals.

The Scottish Information Commissioner's decision was warmly welcomed by environmental and animal welfare groups, but attacked by the fish farming industry for endangering public safety. Thanks to the ruling the public will be able to know if they're buying farmed salmon from sites which kill seals.
The rabid reaction from the blood-thirsty Scottish Seal Slaughter Organisation err….I mean the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation was typical of an industry attempting to justify lethal (and cheaper) means of predator control rather than installing expensive predator nets.
In British Columbia, following damning media coverage of the deaths of sea lions at salmon farms, Marine Harvest Canada announced in 2011 that they would be installing predator nets at a cost of $250,000 per site.
Since one in five of Scotland's salmon farms do not even possess predator nets (only 13% have them installed on site) then it could cost over £25 million to install predator nets at the every one of Scotland's 215 active salmon farms. As For Argyll reports: "Roll on 7 May".
Until Scottish salmon farms ALL install predator nets and stop killing seals then the public should boycott cheap and nasty Scottish farmed salmon.

Beware of ALL farmed salmon – even WWF or ASC-certified "responsible" farmed salmon which can still be sourced from farms which kill seals or other marine mammals.
Write to WWF and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) asking them to stop certifying farmed salmon from sites where seals, sea lions and other marine mammals have been killed (read a letter sent last year to WWF International online here)!
