Mowi may be moving out of Loch Duich – a Marine Protected Area and Special Area of Conservation due to "exceptional flame shell bed and areas of burrowed mud with spectacular fireworks anemones" – but the impacts of toxic salmon farming on marine life will leave a lasting legacy.
Mowi's salmon farming operations have been plagued by problems in Scotland as well as Canada.
In July 2019, Mowi pledged to move out of Loch Duich and Loch Ewe.
Fish Farmer magazine reported in July 2019 that the move out of Loch Duich and Loch Ewe "could happen within two years":
Mowi (formerly called Marine Harvest) have an appalling environmental track record in Loch Duich – with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency reporting over a decade of chemical pollution with repeated breaches of Environmental Quality Standards for the toxic chemical Emamectin benzoate (shown by scientific research to be lethal to shellfish):
