Ocean Rebellion South Devon and Torbay activists have been out again protesting, this time at Sainsbury's in Newton Abbot, Devon. They started by placing stickers on the plastic packed salmon before gathering outside to hand out cards and engage with curious shoppers concerning the RSPCA welfare labeled fish.

The activists were able to inform them of the work of Scamon Scotland in gathering evidence of the appalling conditions both the salmon and cleaner fish swim in. Over 40 million wrasse and lumpfish, brought in to feed on the lice that infest the salmon, die each year alongside many hundreds of thousands of salmon. The feeder fish are imported from the South West of England and also from Ireland depleting local stocks of these slow growing fish.

Despite the use of cleaner fish, some chemical washing using formaldehyde is still necessary which adds to the toxic mix from the crowded fish pens. The fish are often fed mashed up seafish caught from many parts of the world depriving indigenous communities of their ability to feed themselves and make a sustainable living. The Scottish lochs become a toxic wasteland and many thousands of escaped salmon breed with the wild population decreasing their capacity to navigate up the rapids to breed.

The "Died Grey, Dyed Pink" stickers the activists placed on the salmon packs reference the fact that the fish are completely unnatural and have to be dyed pink to match wild salmon that get their colour from their natural prey of shrimp and krill. The Scottish farmed salmon industry is set to expand multiplying this terrible waste and exacerbating the many problems this highly toxic industry brings to the oceans. This is short sighted, dangerous and unethical despite the RSPCA's label that Sainsbury's so prominently display. The RSPCA should be utterly shamefaced. The evidence is there.
