Do you have an update on any welfare inspection at The Scottish Salmon Company's West Strome salmon farm in Loch Carron?

In view of the urgency of the health and welfare situation, Scottish Salmon Watch filed a welfare complaint immediately after filming via:

Dear Don Staniford,

Thank you for your email. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) take all reports of animal welfare concerns seriously and investigate them. We do not comment on individual cases.

Kind Regards,

APHA Scotland.

Dear Don

Thank you for your email requesting an update on the welfare inspection at The Scottish Salmon Company’s West of Strome salmon farm in Loch Carron.

I note you have addressed this enquiry to APHA who are responsible for investigating complaints about the welfare of farmed fish in Scotland. It will be for them to respond as appropriate.

APHA does not provide details or reply in any material way.

Have FHI visited West Strome salmon farm to inspect the lice-infested fish?

Surely Marine Scotland is the competent authority for enforcement of this policy, which exists entirely to deliver higher welfare?

Scottish Salmon Watch believes that sea lice numbers at West Strome salmon farm have been misreported. This farm has been reporting sea lice levels around 1-2 females per fish. Our video footage suggests much higher lice infestation levels.

It is simply impossible for whiteheads to emerge when sea lice levels are as low as 1 – 2.  You need lots of sea lice for at least 3 weeks to precipitate the level of welfare abuse uncovered at West Strome on 6 September.

Has Marine Scotland even visited West Strome salmon farm since 6 September?

Thanks,

Don
