Norwegian salmon giant Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk – owned by Norway's SalMar and Leroy Seafood) filed a writ in Oban Sheriff Court yesterday (1 November 2023) in respect of "wrongful actings" which are referenced as "incursions", "unmanned aerial vehicles", "unmanned underwater vehicles" and the "Digivan Tour". In terms of the latter, the 14-page 'Initial Writ' (which was supported by over 1,000 pages of inventory productions) cited:
The 14-page 'Initial Writ' – filed by law firm Shepherd & Wedderburn on behalf of Scottish Sea Farms – included:
Last month month (12 October), Norwegian-owned Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) threatened legal action against Don Staniford citing the digivan tour visit to South Shian processing plant near Oban on 5 November:
On 27 October 2023, Don Staniford's lawyers replied via email to Scottish Sea Farms:
"With reference to the action raised by MOWI against our client and the decision issued, in case you are not aware, our client is presently appealing that decision. The outcome of that appeal will no doubt have a bearing on the outcome of any action your clients might be contemplating, and as such we would respectfully suggest that any action against our client pending the outcome of the MOWI appeal would be premature.
In terms of our client’s proposed ‘Digivan’ tour which you reference, please note that no part of that exercise would involve our client entering property owned or leased by Scottish Sea Farms Limited.
As for the required action that Scottish Sea Farms Limited seeks being an undertaking as set out in your letter, with respect that request lacks precision and is disproportionate in its scope, and it is not a proposal to which anyone could reasonably agree. As such, and on the basis of the foregoing, our client cannot and does not agree to your client’s request."

Memo to self: celebrate small victories – there's a long way to go before I win the war vs @scotseafarms but today was a good day. Limiting my injunction/undertaking to salmon cages & removing reference to drones, boats, land bases & 'encouraging' others is a 'win' @shepwedd pic.twitter.com/RH3hVuOynq

Media comment from Don Staniford dated 23 January 2025:
"Norwegian giant Scottish Sea Farms – trading in Scotland as Norskott Havbruk – is still desperately trying to fence off the public waters around their lousy salmon farms. Judged by covert surveillance inside salmon farms across Scotland it's not surprising that this Leroy/SalMar owned company has engaged expensive lawyers to suppress the ugly truth. If Scottish Sea Farms want to enforce a permanent injunction – along the lines of Mowi's or even more restrictive – then they will have to fight me in open court. I look forward to debating the public's right to know what's really going on inside RSPCA Assured salmon farms and the law around chattel trespass. Ground-truthing the greenwash of salmon farms is clearly in the public interest. Unlike salmon farmers, the camera never lies."
