Land-Based Salmon Farming is Dead in the Water (along with Yvon Choinard’s unethical investment in Sustainable Blue)!

Land-based salmon farming – shamefully promoted by some NGOs as 'sustainable' and environmentally friendly – is dead in the water.   The death knell for the lethal sector was offically notified this week as news of mass mortalities at Sustainable Blue – the poster child for land-based salmon farming – made waves in the media.  Salmon Business reported (29 November 2023)

As well as millions of Canadian Government-funded dollars flushed down Sustainable Blue's recycled toilet, other investors like Patagonia's Yvon Choinard may be having second thoughts about bank-rolling such a flawed technology.  Forbes reported in November 2019 on a fund-raising dinner in New York in support of land-based salmon farming (showcasing for Sustainable Blue, Atlantic Sapphire and Whole Oceans in particular):

I followed up Yvon Choinard's fishy investment in Sustainable Blue – in the context of Patagonia's funding of the Global Salmon Farming Resistance (i.e. how can Yvon Choinard fund global resistance against salmon farming AND be an investor in land-based salmon farming at the same time?!!!) – back in April 2023 with the journalist who wrote the Forbes article:

Monte,

I am intrigued by the last statement in your November 2019 article:

"Chouinard has put his money where his mouth is: He is an investor in Sustainable Blue"

I ask since Yvon Choinard and Patagonia is the main funder – and founder – of the Global Salmon Farming Resistance movement.

I only became aware of your article recently and Yvon's investment in Sustainable Blue is a significant development.

Where did you source this information?  Could you please share specific details?

Last week (7 April), the Seattle Times reported Sustainable Blue potential expansion in Washington: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/was-dnr-pivots-to-fish-farms-on-land-after-net-pen-controversy/

This development is supported by Wild Fish Conservancy (a member of the Global Salmon Farming Resistance): https://wildfishconservancy.org/commission-hilary-franz-recognized-again-as-a-leader-in-wild-salmon-recovery-for-zero-discharge-aquaculture-commitment/

Suffice to say that $camon $cotland (the group I represent) has serious problems with support for salmon farming – in any shape or form.

Don, at the time of that article, he was indeed an investor.

You might call the company or Patagonia to see if he still is.

All best,

Monte

Despite repeated requests for details of Yvon Choinard's investments in Sustainable Blue – and any other salmon farming companies – there has been no answer, only silence.

Silence cancer
