Back in 1992, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II referred to the year as her 'Annus Horribilis' which she would not look back on with 'undiluted pleasure'.

When Norwegian giant Mowi – who have held a Royal Warrant for over 30 years and who market their factory farmed salmon as "responsibly sourced" via RSPCA Assured where Her Majesty the Queen is still listed as royal patron – may look back on 2022 as their very own Annus Horribilis Salmonis.

Mowi's Q3 2022 financial report – published earlier today (9 November 2022) – certainly makes for grim reading for shareholders in the Norwegian behemoth. "Our Scottish farming operations has experienced a troublesome year with regards to biology and the 2022 volume guidance has been reduced," reports the Q3 2022 report.

Here's data for June 2022 which reveals a staggering mortality rate of 55.9% at Mowi's Greanem salmon farm in North Uist (a site certified by the ASC in April 2022 and accredited as 'welfare-friendly' via RSPCA Assured):

A closer examination of new mortality data published on 6 October 2022 by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate reveals which salmon farms in Scotland are the most deadly in terms of mass mortalities. Here's the list of Scottish salmon's worst serial killers since data was reported by salmon farming companies in 2017* – headed by hatcheries where mortalities are more pronounced in terms of numbers:
