It's Like a Bad Mowi (Deja Vu After Marine Harvest Horror Show)!

2019 is not over yet but it's already looking like an annus horribilis for Mowi. If the bad news keeps on coming, Mowi (which only came into existence as a company on 1 January 2019) may be forced to re-brand themselves again before the year is out! Mowi's CEO admitted earlier this year that they changed their name from Marine Harvest on 1 January 2019 due to negative consumer perception.

During 2019 (since the company tarnished the good name of the Mowinckel family), negative perception of Mowi has leapt like a lice-infested salmon all over the globe. Salmon Business reported (3 October 2019):

In Ireland too, Mowi is being forced to close down a salmon farm after breaching biomass limits.

And in Chile, Mowi may lose a salmon farm concession following a mass escape.

In Scotland too, Mowi is being forced to move two polluting salmon farms in Loch Ewe and Loch Duich. BBC News reported in July 2019:

In May 2019, BBC's Panorama reported that Mowi was being investigated by SEPA in relation to chemicals.

CBC News reported (2 October 2019) on Mowi's mortality problems in Canada.

"CBC News requested a site tour from Northern Harvest Sea Farms, a subsidiary of MOWI, but that request was denied," reported CBC News (2 October 2019).

It's not hard to see why Mowi do not want cameras coming close to their cages.

Through the yellow bars of the jailed salmon you can see rotten and skinless carcasses – similar to the gruesome photos of flayed alive salmon leaked by a whistleblower working at a Mowi salmon farm in Kilbrannan Sound in 2018.

David Ainsley dived under Mowi's salmon farm at Bagh Dail Nan Ceann (in Gaelic it translates as 'Bay of the Dead Heads'):

He videoed dead and dying salmon at the bottom of the cages.

Disease-ridden Mowi (who controversially changed their name from Marine Harvest on 1 January 2019 due to "negative consumer perceptions") owns the salmon farm in the Sound of Jura. Bagh Dail nan Ceann was rated as the joint second worst salmon farm in Scotland in a welfare report by OneKind in 2018 (Mowi's neighbouring salmon farm at Poll na Gille was rated the worst).

Mowi has recently reported mass mortalities in Newfoundland in Canada.

And Mowi's escalating lice problems in Norway are proving costly.

In Scotland during 2019 Mowi has already reported close to 2 million mass mortalities due to Pancreas Disease, Cardiomyopathy Syndrome, Anaemia, Gill Disease and 'treatment losses'.

No wonder Mowi did not Scottish Salmon Watch filming near their farms when we visited earlier this month.

When Scottish Salmon Watch visited Mowi's Bagh Dail Nan Ceann salmon farm in early July 2019 there were certainly visible health challenges with dead and dying lumpfish littering the surface of the one cage visited.

Mowi's salmon farm at Bagh Dail Nan Ceann (Bay of the Dead Heads) also detailed mortality and disease problems in cleaner fish in the FHI June 2019 report (with "craters disease" cited).

David Ainsley submitted his concerns about ADDs to the Scottish Parliament's inquiry into salmon farming in 2018 – including his view that Scottish salmon farms and the Scottish Government are breaching European law.

David Ainsley's complaint to the European Commission appears to have triggered one of the only unannounced salmon farm inspections by Marine Scotland during 2018 – to Mowi's nearby Port Na Cro salmon farm.
