Advocates for Animals wrote to the Scottish Government in March 2020 challenging the lawfulness of Thermolicers under animal welfare legislation.
In April 2020, the Scottish Government replied claiming that "the Scottish Government takes animal welfare seriously, including that of farmed salmon" (the same line used in a Scottish Parliamentary reply from Fergus Ewing in March 2020). Advocates for Animals take issue with the Scottish Government's legal opinion.
